Fairytale STEM: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Optical Illusions

Optical Illusions (4)

October was a perfect month to share The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. We used an abbreviated picture book version, but it was the perfect story to get us in the mood for Halloween. After sharing the story, we discussed what might have really happened to Ichabod Crane and how optical illusions play into the story and Halloween sights. We looked at different optical illusions and argued over whether we all saw the same object or not. After this, we moved to our project for the day, thaumatropes!

Thaumatropes are dual images that when moved quickly blur to look like one image. We used pre-drawn figures, a rider and a horse and Jack Skeleton and a pumpkin. We glued the circles together and strung rubber bands through the sides. The kids then rolled the rubber bands between their fingers to create the solid images.
