Fairytale STEM: Three Little Pigs Geometry (and Engineering)

Three Little Pigs Geometry (3)

The book The Three Little Pigs, an Architectural Tale was the complete inspiration for this STEM program.  We read the book together and then drew houses for the little pigs. We then discussed that a house would need to be a three dimensional shape, not just a flat drawing. We talked about what 3D means and the difference between height, width and depth. Miss Andrea shared architectural plans that showed different dimensions.

The kids then got to work on drawing plans that could be built into a 3D cube. The engineers could then choose materials to build their structure. We used pipe cleaners, straws, aluminum foil, popsicle sticks and masking tape. Everyone had very unique structure and a few even looked like they could withstand the Big Bad Wolf.Three Little Pigs Geometry (5) Three Little Pigs Geometry (9)
